Types of Tests

A test is a method of measuring a person’s ability, knowledge, or performance in a specific domain. In language education, the need to assess learning outcomes has led to the development of various types of language tests. Traditionally, language testing focused primarily on assessing knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. However, with evolving perspectives on language learning, there has been a shift towards evaluating a learner’s ability to use language effectively in real-world contexts. The major types of language tests are discussed below:

1. Aptitude Test

Aptitude tests are designed to assess a learner’s innate ability or potential to learn a foreign or second language. They are often used to predict how well a person might do in language learning before instruction begins.

Key Components of Language Aptitude:

Phonological Ability: The ability to perceive and distinguish sounds, intonation, and stress patterns.

Syntactic Ability: The ability to recognize grammatical patterns and word functions in sentences.

Sound-Coding Ability: The ability to identify and remember new sounds in a language.

Grammar-Coding Ability: The capacity to understand grammatical functions of sentence components.

Inductive Learning Ability: The ability to infer language rules without direct instruction.

Memory: The ability to recall vocabulary, sentence structures, and grammatical patterns.

A widely known example is the Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT), which is often used in military and academic settings.

2. Diagnostic Tests

A diagnostic test is designed to identify a learner’s strengths and weaknesses in language. It helps teachers understand specific areas where students may need remedial instruction. An example of diagnostic test is Prator’s Diagnostic Passage (1942) — where students read a passage aloud and their pronunciation is analyzed based on a checklist of common errors.

Purpose of Diagnostic Tests

At the broader level of language skills—such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing—diagnostic testing serves the purpose of identifying learners’ strengths and weaknesses. For example, it helps determine whether a student is significantly weaker in speaking than in reading.

Beyond general skills, diagnostic tests also aim to examine specific aspects of a learner’s language performance, such as:

  • Grammatical accuracy
  • Linguistic appropriacy
  • Pronunciation or fluency in oral communication
  • Coherence and cohesion in writing

The main purpose of diagnostic testing is to find out what learning still needs to take place and to support more effective and targeted instruction.

3. Proficiency Tests

Proficiency tests are designed to evaluate a person’s overall ability in a language, regardless of any specific course or training they may have received. Unlike achievement tests, which are based on specific instructional content, proficiency tests are based on what a person should be able to do in the language to be considered “proficient.”

The term proficient can vary in meaning depending on the context and purpose of the test:

1. Purpose-Specific Proficiency

Some proficiency tests are tailored to determine whether a candidate can use the language effectively in a particular professional or academic setting.

Examples:

  • A test to assess if someone can work as a United Nations translator.
  • A test (like IELTS or TOEFL) to evaluate if a student can study at a British or American university.
  • These tests may even offer subject-specific versions, such as different test formats for arts or sciences, reflecting the specialized language needs of those domains.

2. General Language Proficiency

Other tests aim to assess a person’s overall command of the language, without linking it to any specific profession or study program.

Examples:

  • Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

These tests certify that a candidate has reached a certain level of general competence, measured against predefined standards.

4. Achievement Tests

An achievement test is a type of assessment designed to measure how much a student has learned in relation to the specific content, skills, and objectives of a language course or instructional program. Unlike proficiency tests, which evaluate general language ability regardless of prior instruction, achievement tests are directly tied to classroom teaching and course content. There are two types of Achievement tests:

1. Final Achievement Tests (Summative)

Final achievement tests are administered at the end of a course and serve a summative assessment purpose. They evaluate how well students have met the overall learning objectives of the course. These tests help in making decisions about grading, promotion, or certification, and also assess the effectiveness of the course content and instruction.

2. Progress Achievement Tests (Formative)

Progress achievement tests are given during the course and are used for formative assessment. They measure students’ progress toward achieving course objectives by focusing on short-term learning goals. These tests help teachers adjust their teaching strategies and provide students with timely feedback, supporting continuous improvement in learning.

Purposes of Achievement Tests

  • To determine how successfully students have met course objectives
  • To assess the effectiveness of the teaching methods, syllabus, and materials
  • To provide feedback for improving instruction
  • To inform decisions about promotion, grading, or certification

5. Formative Assessment

Formative assessment is ongoing and is carried out during the learning process so that it provides immediate feedback to both teachers and students. This feedback allows for adjustments in teaching and learning strategies to improve student outcomes.

Key Features:

  • It helps teachers continuously monitor students’ progress.
  • It informs instructional decisions to better support student learning.
  • It encourages student involvement and reflection on their own learning.
  • It provides opportunities for peer and self-assessment, promoting learner autonomy.

Examples:

  • Teacher feedback on writing drafts
  • Classroom quizzes and discussions
  • Learning journals or portfolios

6. Summative Assessment

Summative assessment is conducted at the end of an instructional unit or course to evaluate overall learning and performance.

Key Features:

  • It evaluates students’ knowledge based on a set of predefined standards or benchmarks.
  • It is typically used for determining grades, promotion, or certification.
  • It reflects the cumulative learning and achievement of students over a period of time.

Examples:

  • End-of-term exams
  • Final oral or written presentations
  • District or nationwide assessments

7. Norm-Referenced Test (NRT)

A norm-referenced test is designed to compare a student’s performance to that of a peer group. These tests rank students to show relative achievement and are often used to make decisions about placement, selection, or eligibility.

Key Features:

  • Compares individual performance to that of other test takers.
  • Focuses on ranking students (e.g., top 10%, below average).
  • Often used in competitive or large-scale assessments.
  • Does not specify what a student can or cannot do in terms of specific skills.
  • Encourages comparision rather than individual mastery.
  • Results depend on how others perform, not just the individual.
  • Results are interpreted using percentiles or comparative scores.

8. Criterion-Referenced Test (CRT)

A criterion-referenced test measures a student’s performance against predefined standards or learning objectives, not in comparison with other students. It shows whether the student has mastered specific skills.

Key Features:

  • Evaluates whether students meet specific criteria or learning goals.
  • Focuses on individual achievement and mastery of content.
  • All students can pass or fail based on their own performance.
  • Often used in classroom assessments or certification tests.
  • Promotes positive learning by aligning with course objectives.
  • Results provide detailed feedback on what learners can do.

9. Direct vs. Indirect Testing

Direct testing involves asking learners to perform the exact language skill we want to measure. For example, if we want to assess writing ability, we ask students to write an essay. If we want to evaluate speaking, we ask them to speak. This method tries to create realistic tasks, even though the test setting limits authenticity. Direct testing is more commonly used for productive skills like speaking and writing because the student’s performance itself shows their ability. It is relatively easy to design and evaluate, and it encourages positive learning practices (known as beneficial backwash), since students must practice the actual skill being tested.

Indirect testing, on the other hand, measures the underlying abilities that support a language skill, rather than the skill itself. For example, identifying grammatical errors in sentences might be used to infer writing ability, or identifying rhyming words might be used to infer pronunciation skills. This kind of testing allows for a broader sample of skills to be measured efficiently, but it has a drawback: the connection between the test results and actual language performance is often weak or uncertain. We might test vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation separately, but still not predict how well someone can actually write a composition.

Some tests are semi-direct. These are often used in speaking assessments where candidates respond to recorded prompts, and their answers are later scored by examiners. They simulate direct interaction without being fully face-to-face.

10. Discrete-Point vs. Integrative Testing

Discrete-point testing focuses on assessing one language element at a time. For example, each question in a test might target a specific grammatical rule, vocabulary word, or sound. These tests are usually structured as individual items, such as multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank questions, and they typically test knowledge in isolation. Discrete-point tests are most often indirect in nature and are commonly used in diagnostic grammar tests.

In contrast, integrative testing requires learners to use multiple language elements together to complete a task. These tests reflect more realistic language use and include tasks such as essay writing, dictation, summarizing spoken information, or completing a cloze passage (a text with missing words). Integrative tests assess how well a learner can integrate grammar, vocabulary, cohesion, and meaning in context. While these are often direct tests, some forms—like cloze tests—can still be considered indirect.

11. Objective vs. Subjective Testing

The difference between objective and subjective testing lies entirely in how the tests are scored—not in how they are designed or administered.

Objective testing requires no judgment from the scorer. Answers are clear-cut, and the correct responses are predetermined. For example, multiple-choice questions or true/false items are scored objectively because there is only one correct answer, and anyone scoring them would give the same result. This kind of scoring is highly reliable, as different scorers (or the same scorer at different times) will reach the same conclusions.

Subjective testing, on the other hand, involves judgment. Scoring depends on the scorer’s interpretation. Examples include essay writing, oral interviews, or short answer questions. These tasks require the evaluator to decide how well the response meets the criteria. Degrees of subjectivity vary—scoring an essay is more subjective than marking a short written answer.

12.Computer Adaptive Testing

Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) is a smart way of testing that adjusts the level of difficulty based on how well a student answers each question. It starts with a question of average difficulty. If the student answers it correctly, the computer gives a harder question next; if the answer is wrong, an easier one is given. This process continues until the computer has enough information to estimate the student’s ability accurately. Unlike regular paper tests where everyone answers the same set of questions, CAT saves time by not asking very easy or very hard questions that do not match the student’s level. This method is more efficient and gives a better idea of a student’s true skill. Even oral interviews are a kind of adaptive testing because the questions change depending on how the student responds.
